20250620T1000 20250620T1045 America/New_York From Paper to Pixels: Transforming Paper Bookplates to Digital Solutions

Fondren Library at Rice University has historically used paper bookplates to identify ownership, recognize donors, memorialize individuals, and highlight special collections or funding sources within our collections. With the move to digital collections and infrastructure, we began exploring the possibility of using digital bookplates to replace paper ones. In this presentation, we will discuss the strategies and technologies we utilized to make the transition from paper to digital. We will provide a brief overview of the background surrounding Fondren Library's acquisition and adoption of ALMA-D, why it was chosen for the virtual bookplate project, and the challenges we encountered. Additionally, we will describe how we leveraged the AWS SDK and other scripting techniques to overcome issues we encountered. We will also outline the normalization rules we developed to ease the workload on catalogers. Overall, this project has enabled us to replace many of our physical bookplates with digital ones.
